Default "Torn Between Two Worlds"

(this is not a GW versus WOW thread, so keep that shit to yourself, get it?)

Two weeks ago, someone bought World of Warcraft for me, as a gift, and 2 game-time cards. They said we should try it out. I did.

As said, it is now 2 weeks later.

I am weighing many things on my mind about Guild Wars and this new one, WOW. Some of them are:

Guild Wars - The GOOD NEWS:

1 - I have a large, close-knit guildwars guild.
2 - Guildies all mesh well, we get along.
3 - I feel that PVP has a reward that is measured in more than stats and faction, and I have met some truly badass people there.
4 - Being level 20 is nice, and I can explore more.
5 - I have no economical issues in game.

Guild Wars - The BAD NEWS:

1 - The people I constantly encounter in the game that I do not know are increasingly annoying, spiteful, arrogant pieces of shit.
2 - The people on forums for this game are an opinionated lot, and that is not the problem, it is their inability to take criticism or provide valid REASONS why they fell as they do without resorting to verbal violence.
3 - There is more complaining in Guild Wars from the people who play it than a line at the foodstamp office in -30 weather.
4 - If you are not in agreement with a sizeable portion of the population that "grinding is bad or does exist" or "nerfing is bad or exists" then you are branded a heretic and treated like a leper.
5 - I am tired of killing mergoyles and Avicara and the same impish damn things

World of Warcraft - The GOOD NEWS:

1 - The night I made an account, a guild soaked me into the fold, showed me the ropes, and has treated me with dignity, respect, helped me attain level 23 on quests alone, and has given me gear, advice, and all manner of human aid.
2 - My guild mates are online more than I am, and that says something, as I am a self-employed person with lots of time to play. No matter when I log on, I have someone to fall on for help or to talk to.
3 - Other players have been beyond kind and friendly to me. You wander around outside settlements and pass some Troll guy who then proceeds to buff me for 30 minutes in gobs of shit, simply because. THAT is gaming with a conscience folks.
4 - People are not anally retentive about any issue that I have heard about in Guild Wars. They are all aloof, friendly, and humor is rampant.
5 - The server I play on is loaded with uber-high en level characters, and none of them flaunt it like the 12 year old taktards in GW
6 - My quest rewards MATTER. I get loot that is so far beyond 15k gw armor it makes me almost giggle in spite of myself. Seriously. My level 18 in WOW could KILL my level TWENTY in gw...barehanded!
7 - The economy in WOW is 100%, without a doubt, driven by each player and the choices he or she makes. If you craft stuff, you earn the abilities to make and sell some seriously high end gear. If oyu save money, you earn it. Quests pay money in many cases. Not "450 xp".
8 - Level 60 is apparently the xp cap as far as I can see so far. Mind bogglign potential.

World of Warcraft - The BAD NEWS:

1 - I am in a smaller guild in this one than GW (3 less but still):
2 - Weapons and armor must be paid to be kept "durable" or, over time, they cease to function at all. (this is tricky if you are far from a town)
3 - Corpse Running is ANNOYING AS HELL, but not quite as irritating as "boss running" in GW, you know, you die, then run all the way back to the boss that killed you, and find your henchmen mutilated again. LOL
4 - Learning curve can be intimidating to new players. There is SO MUCH TO SEE AND DO.
-----------------------

Basically, as the thread title suggests, I am torn between 2 amazingly rich gaming experiences. I will stay with Guild Wars because I love the game, and my guildmates have truly become friends, and I refuse to abandon them. I also will stick to WOW, because even though I am at level 23, which is mighty godlike compared to how you start out, and even to my gw 20 character, I have not even scratched the tip of the surface of the iceberg in sheer volume of content available. I mean, WOW is a WORLD. Literally. the capital city of my racial choice on my orc is literally to SCALE of a town, it took me 25 minutes to get all through it. That my friends is escapist fantasy, and I am escaping. Often.

Long live Guild Wars.
Long Love WOW alongside it!

Does anyone else share my enthusiasm for WOW and GW both?

Very nice post, I do wonder what the impression would be once GW is 9 months old

You're very lucky (or initiated/skilled, whichever )

If you are liking both, I don't see why you can't play both. I know someone who does (I personally cannot handle more than one RPG at a time, but w/e). Since GW isn't pay-to-play, there is also no real problem with putting iton the shelf for a month or so while you play WoW.

Oh, and the reason WoW players are more mature is because little kids can't afford to pay monthly

Great post

Being a refugee of WoW, I have two things to say:

1. Enjoy it while it lasts

2. God help you if you joined a PvP server

It was the arrogant, childish, selfish, elitist, boorish and generally unfriendly people that eventually were the death knell for my time in WoW. If you have found a good guild, congratulations and best of luck to you - but don't let your guard down. There's a lot more room for player scamming and destruction of hours of work in WoW than in Guild Wars. Stick to your guildies as much as possible for instance runs and the like - general pick up groups will probably land you with either incompetent players or theives, if not both.

That lovely half an hour walk through Ogrimmar just to reach a trainer or vendor you need will get really annoying soon. So will the half an hour gryphon rides and the two hour setup times so that you can just go out and kill ten monsters.

Be sure to roll a Night Elf alt and walk through Darnassus at least once. I'd say Ironforge, too, but no one walks through Ironforge. They lag out and fall in the lava pit.

Start saving for your mount - yesterday. Unless of course you happen to be a warlock (since you seemed to indicate you're Horde, I'm assuming you're not a paladin).

WoW is fun, especially at lower levels, don't get me wrong. But keep your guard up and stick with your guild - you will run into some very friendly players, to be sure, but I can promise you (oh boy can I ever regale you with stories) that you haven't found utopia yet. Horde is generally a better choice though - most of the immature kiddies seem to pick Alliance, I guess because it's easier to identify with the characters.

Anyway, be careful, have fun, enjoy, and be sure not to give up on Guild Wars yet.

As much as I don't like WoW (mainly because of all the cartoony crap), it will probably last you a lot longer than GW. GW for me ended a long time ago, there's just not very much to do in the game. As opposed to WoW where there's loads to do. It might require a lot more time to lvl, but there actually is probably just as much skill involved as there is in GW because the style of battle is so different.

Hell to be honest, I play Rose Online, (free MMORPG) and I really really enjoy it, I first looked at it a long while back and was like "Yeah screw this kiddie piece of crap." Then I tried it and it's actually pretty neat. Then again, I was getting desperate once GW lost it's luster for me.

The server I play on is Elune, and RP one. The pvp shit is for the birds IMO, as guild wars did in fact ruin that shit for me sorta. I came to GW from Lineage II and Runescape and SWG before that, so I have had the ganking, pk, tk, homicidal chinese farm bots (yes they gank you in lineage 2 all the time if you try to hunt and they are botting, they literally gang up to defend their own) and all that shit. Too many small penises with big mouths, if you get my meaning.

I like my orc warrior. I have earned the ability to smelt ore, and make armor and axes and sell them *demonic grin at those fools who ebay*. I literally have made 12 gold and I've only been playing this long.

Guild Wars was something I waited for a long time, from the first time I heard about it, and although I have only one issue with it - human beings and their madness, I love the game. WOW will never take the gw from my heart, but neither will GW keep me from WOW. I will simply log on one, then another at random.

As for what I do for a living, I am a musician, so yeah I have lots of free time, as I do all aspects of the publishing, mastering, composition, etc. Gaming is my lunch break, so to speak.

I play both right now and basically the only reason i play wow is for the loot that you get, and the pve side is, like you said, an acutall world. i can't stand the pvp in wow as it's basically who has a higher level or better gear, i didn't see much skill required.

I play guild wars for the enjoyable pve away from getting ganked every 10 min, and of course the balance pvp system which takes a lot of planning and skill.

I love both games but that's because i play them both for different reasons when i get bored of getting usless crap over and over again in guildwars i go play wow for awhile and find some sweet weapon and that takes care of that. When i get tired of being ganked, or just bored from fighting one monster at a time and only really needing to use one skill to kill him (and usually it doesn't matter which skills you use) well then i go play GW where i need skill and good teamworking skills

my advice play both as combined i think they make perfect MM(CC)ORPG
